Pleasurekraft Returns to Toronto

Every so often, a group comes along which shakes the entire dance scene from its very roots with a style so unique, and a sound so intoxicating, that it influences scores of imitators, and inspires a new generation of producers. Pleasurekraft is exactly such a group.

The brainchild of Kaveh Soroush and Kalle Ronngardh, Pleasurekraft was born in the summer of 2009. Having had their very first track played by Pete Tong on his Essential Selection, and then doing remixes for Chymera, and John Acquaviva’s Definitive imprint, Pleasurekraft became a new name to keep an eye on.

Fast forward to the spring of 2010, and the year’s biggest smash hit, Pleasurekraft’s “Tarantula” was released. It quickly earned the support of the world’s biggest DJs and went on to win not only Top Tech House track at the Beatport awards in Miami in March 2011 - but took the coveted grand prize of Top Track of the Year (ALL Genres).

This past week Lauryn Hill had her first live performance in Toronto in over 10 years. It was hard to swallow when I was told tickets were sold out within 3 hours after going on sale. True to her art and remarkably talented, the former Fugees member is well known for her legendary album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill which still to this day inspires people all over the world. It hardly seems like a year has passed since ambulances were called to the home of Michael Jackson, but June 25th marks the anniversary of the pop star's death. He was pronounced dead at a LA hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. So much has happened during those twelve months, not the least of which is that his estate earned $783 million from album and DVD sales, his 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV music catalog and various publishing deals. His music, dance moves and legacy will live forever on and will never be forgotten.

The Lakers did it again !! The team celebrated their 16th championship parade downtown starting form the Staples Center towards USC. The tribute also included Cheerleaders, coaching staff, team family members, and past Lakers greats like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.Based on the previous parade attendance city officials anticipate a crowd of between 500,000 and 2 million fans along the two-mile parade route. From my prediction there had to be over a million fans out there today easily..It was absolutely crazy !!! To sum up the experience from the loud air horns, screaming fans, t-shirts sellers ever two steps, and purple & gold everywhere you go, it was defiantly one for the books. Did not even spot one celtic fan...Lol Not surprising when people were chanting "MVP..MVP", "Back to Back without Shaq", and of course "3peat". If you were in anywhere in Southern California, downtown Los Angeles was the place to be.

The Lakers successfully defended their NBA championship by beating the Celtics 83-79 in an ugly struggle that was also a beautifully victorious game 7 of the NBA Finals. Now for the second time in two seasons, the Lakers are the kings of the court and have been crowned the NBA champions. Not only Boston was the team they defeated in the finals, but they won the title at home and Kobe got his 5th ring. It really does not get any better than this. Kobe Bryant had off game scoring a total of 23 points shooting 6/24, but Ron Artest may have been the hero with 20 and was the only efficient Laker shooter all night. Pau Gasol finished with 19 points and 18 boards, including 9 offensive glass. Is it me or do I smell a 3peat ?!?! ;) Till Next year..

Caliph's Debut Album 'The Resignation' Soon to be Released

Building on the buzz generated from the well-received mixtape ‘Music & Me’ [2008], recording artist Caliph is currently working on his full-length debut album, ‘The Resignation’. The album was recorded at Cherry Beach Sound Recording Studio here in Toronto, Canada early 2010. Caliph has been added to the list of names who have recorded at Cherry Beach Sound such as Drake, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Wyclef, Timbaland, K-OS, Keri Hilson, Belly, K'naan, and the list goes on...

I had a listening session with Caliph himself up in the "Nasty North" last weekend and after listening to some hit singles off the album such as "Slow Your Roll" , "Give Em' What They Want", & "Dedicated", I can tell you the project is a SOLID hip hop album with some unheard classics. Equally capable singing or rapping, Caliph’s clever lyricism and insightful subject matter encompasses a variety of themes drawn from his own life. If you haven't heard of Caliph by now, you need to tune in, PLEASE BELIEVE !! The production credits were handled by a mixture of industry names including; M-Phazes, Izzy the Kid, Analogic, Auditory, and Boonie Mayfield. As of today Nasty North Records has not announced a official release date for Caliph's debut album but the project should be dropping hopefully around summer.
Nasty North Records is an independent Toronto-based record label founded by Chris Kukurudza. Be on the look out for this young talented duo, remember where you heard it first. ;)

This was our final project for DMA144 Video, and our group had to consist a 5 minute movie on DVD. This final project was worth 50% of our final mark so you know we had to kill this project ! Rock Bottom was all shot and edited in 1 day thanks to our well talented directors Brandon Roberts & Alan Chang. The idea of this short film was to have 4 different shots (medium shot, two shot, pan shot, zoom shot) with 3 different settings & the video ending at 60 seconds. After putting our ideas together with my co members we came along with a short no audio skit of a thief pretty much pick pocketing another student starring me (Aaron Tajik) & co-member Vishaul Ramsey. We tried to pitch a little humor into it even without the audio. Enjoy

Inspiration part 2 - Takashi Murakami

Takashi has inspired both admiration and confusion. Inspired primarily by anime, Japanese animation, and manga, Japanese comics, Murakami's paintings and sculptures feature bright, candy-colored images of cartoon-like characters, with large eyes and exaggerated body parts. His work is crazyyyyyyy !!!! If you can recall Kanye West's 2007 LP "Graduation", Takashi did all the art for the cd cover and booklet. Check it out.

Kanye's album sold 2.5 million copies wolrdwide going double platinum, Covers nice eh ? ;)

This skateboard project was assigned reflecting from the toy that was designed from two weeks ago. No images of my toy has been posted yet but the best way to describe it in words would be something like "The C.N. Tower Monster." I decided not to make the board bright and colorful so I kept it simple with the black & grey blend with the orange to have some color. If your wondering what that scribble is on the left side of the board it's acthully my signature :P No scribble!! Also, once if you click the image to enlarge it, you would be able to see the lights off the buildings from the skyline in rows and collums repeating numoic area code for Toronto "416"

This project was for my Friday Mutli-Media class with Aviva Furman and our task was to design a collage of any musician & genre of choice. The artist I selected was Jay Z because he's a huge icon today in rap music which leads to my genre as hip-hop. With my collage you can see three different albums, magazine cover, graffiti , and of course a piece of lyrics off hit "99 Problems"
